CLASS TITLE:
LIFEGUARD
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under general supervision insures
conformance with water safety rules and regulations at public beaches, lakes
and swimming areas and pools, effects rescues as needed, administers first aid
and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, maintains assigned area and does other work
as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:
Positions in this class must be in
good health and strong swimmers with knowledge of boating, skin diving and
search and rescue techniques.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Primary: Safeguards and
supervises swimming and water recreation activities at public
beaches, lakes and pools; warns swimmers of
dangerous actions; enforces beach and
pool regulations; makes rescues.
Secondary: Administers first
aid and cardio pulmonary resuscitation; cleans and
maintains equipment and patrols assigned area by
foot, boat paddleboard, vehicle or by
swimming as may be needed; writes reports; provides
information to the public; instructs
in aquatic recreation and referees aquatic events.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES REQUIRED:
A Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s
License. (Incumbent may be required to
utilize his/her privately owned vehicle in the
course of county business with
reimbursement for mileage at the standard county
rate); a valid Red Cross First Aid
Certificates, preferably at the Advanced level; a
valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
Certificate; a valid Red Cross Advanced Life Saving
Certificate.
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENT:
Lifeguards are required to successfully complete a
designated performance test during
each year of employment
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
Search and Rescue technique, first aid, small craft operations and
maintenance, skin diving and swimming techniques.
Ability to:
Perform manual labor, swim and
dive, skin dive to a depth of twenty feet, follow oral and written
instructions, meet and deal tactfully and effectively with other employees and
general public; operate and effect rescues with all types of aquatic rescue
equipment and swim meters in minutes or
less.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Six months of public beach or pool
life guarding experience, or, exhibited superior swimming ability.
EDUCATION:
Completion of the tenth grade.
